Sunday, July 5, 2020: Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to the CHS Vientiane Worship Service Resources

We invite you to take time this Sunday, in families or very small groups of friends, to responsibly share space to worship God together.
If you are on your own, please be assured we are together in the Spirit and if you have needs, or just want to share concerns, please don't be afraid to reach out
and share these with the CHS community.  Contact details can be found on our church website at:  http://www.thechs.org/

Ideas for parents to use with their children at home can be found on this page (click this link).

Scripture Sentence
“Serve one another in love.”
                                     (Galatians 5:13)

Collect
Almighty God,
your Son Jesus Christ has taught us
that what we do
for the least of your children
we do also  for him.
Give us the will to serve others
as he was the servant of all,
who gave up his life and died for us,
but lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Call to Worship
Jesus or John?
Party or abstinence?
Need it be a choice?
Can’t it be both?
John bore his burdens.
Jesus did too.
Same but different.
Jesus offers us the chance
to lighten our load.
So he enjoyed a party or two,
and enjoyed the company of sinners.
Jesus offers us the chance
to lighten our load.
Come on, shrug off that burden,
pull up a chair, sinner,
and join Jesus,
let him take your burdens:
let him lighten your load.
Amen.

Opening Hymn of Praise
All creatures of our God and King (MP7)

1  All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing:
hallelujah, hallelujah!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
thou silver moon with softer gleam:

O praise Him, O praise Him,
hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

2  Thou rushing wind that art so strong,
ye clouds that sail in heaven along,
O praise Him, hallelujah!
Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
ye lights of evening, find a voice:

O praise Him, O praise Him,
hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

3  Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
make music for thy Lord to hear,
hallelujah, hallelujah!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
that givest man both warmth and light:

O praise Him, O praise Him,
hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

4  And all ye men of tender heart,
forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye, hallelujah!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
praise God and on Him cast your care:

O praise Him, O praise Him,
hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

5  Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him, hallelujah!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three-in-One:

O praise Him, O praise Him,
hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

Confession
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us and care for us all the time.
We know that this week we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Silence

Leader: God of the burden
All: take my heavy load.
Leader: Jesus, teacher of sinners,
All: take my heavy load.
Leader: Enlivening Spirit
All: take my heavy load.
Leader: Come all who are weary,
to the One who will bear it all.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you
will find rest for your souls.”
(Matthew 11:28-30)
Response: Jesus, break these chains holding me.
In serving you I will be free.

Children’s Song
I am a new creation (MP254)

I am a new creation,
no more in condemnation,
here in the grace of God I stand.
My heart is over-flowing,
my love just keeps on growing,
here in the grace of God I stand.
And I will praise You, Lord,
yes I will praise You, Lord,
and I will sing of all that You have done.
A joy that knows no limit,
a lightness in my spirit –
here in the grace of God I stand.

Prayer for / with the Children
Father, mother,
sister, brother,
grandpa, grandma,
aunty, uncle,
cousin, friend.
Each one unique,
special to you, O God,
for you made us all.

Some of us are loud,
some of us are quiet.
Some of us like sport,
some of us don’t.
Some of us like nature,
some of us like technology.
No one is better
or worse
than the other,
we are just different,
just the way you made us.

Thank you God,
that we are all different,
that no two of us are the same.
Thank you that you love us all
and that you accept us as we are.

Help us to enjoy the company
of those who are different,
especially those
who seem very different.
Help us to find ways to engage
and love them as you do.

Help us to look out for those people
who need us to be a friend,
or to share a smile or a meal with,
to visit when they are lonely,
or to comfort when they are sad.

Thank you for the people
who are friends with us,
who help us
when we are sad or lonely,
when we are tired or hungry.

Remind us that Jesus
is always with us
ready to comfort us
and give us rest
when we need it.

Thank you for always
loving us and for giving
us Jesus to be our friend.
Amen.

Sermon

Song
The Lord is gracious and compassionate (MP1111)

The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
The Lord is good to all,
He has compassion on all that He has made.
As far as the east is from the west,
that’s how far He has removed our transgressions from us.
As far as the east is from the west,
that’s how far He has removed our transgressions from us.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord.
The Lord is gracious . . .

Offering
(Please do bear in mind that as long as we are still able to,
CHS is continuing to support various projects and people
in need and needs will likely increase during this time.
You may want to set aside some money in an envelope every Sunday
and bring these to church when we next meet back at ARDA.)

Dedication of our Offering
Blessed are you, Lord God,
from the first of time to the last,
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power,
the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;
for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
Yours, Lord, is the sovereignty,
and you are exalted over all as head.
Wealth and honour come from you;
you rule over all.

Of your own we now give you,
for the good of your Church
and the glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Intercessions
Use the spaces prayerfully to name people
or groups of people belonging to the
community or working in an area of need,
events taking place in the news
or places and people close to your hearts.

Use the following response after each
bidding: Thanks be to God – through
Jesus Christ our Lord!

Father, we pray for your world, and today we
pray for those who can’t choose how to live
their lives because of slavery, poverty, war
or oppression. We thank you for the people
who are working to free them, especially
organisations such as Amnesty International,
Stop the Traffik, World Vision…
Response: Thanks be to God – through
Jesus Christ our Lord!

Father, we pray for our community. We thank
you that we are free to choose to follow
you. We thank you for people who care for
us and others in our communities, especially
police, healthcare workers, guards, civil servants, teachers...
Response: Thanks be to God – through
Jesus Christ our Lord!

Father, we pray for people who are slaves
to sin because they have not yet heard
about the new life that you offer. (We name them
before God silently.) Help us
to tell them about your light and easy yoke.
We thank you for rescuing us from our
slavery and giving us the freedom of serving
you.
Response: Thanks be to God – through
Jesus Christ our Lord!

Father, we pray for the sick, the weary and
for those who are sad,
especially we pray for your comfort for husband Dipak and young son Angad
following the passing of Alka this past week.
Help us to share their burdens in the way that you do.
Thank you for your promise of rest for the
weary and heavy burdened.
Response: Thanks be to God – through
Jesus Christ our Lord!
In His name we pray
Amen

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Closing Song
And can it be (MP33)

1  And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!

2  ’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies:
who can explore His strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
let angel minds inquire no more.

3  He left His Father’s throne above –
so free, so infinite His grace –
emptied Himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam’s helpless race.
    ’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
for, O my God, it found out me!

4  Long my imprisoned spirit lay
    fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray –
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free.
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

5  No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
    and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach the eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

Prayer of Blessing and Sending
We commend ourselves into Your hands,
together with all who are dear to us.
Strengthen and confirm Your faithful people;
stir up the careless,
relieve the sick,
give peace to the dying,
that Your holy name may be glorified
in Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

Blessing
Bless all who worship You, almighty God,
from the rising of the sun to its setting:
from Your goodness enrich us,
by Your love inspire us,
by Your spirit guide us,
by Your power protect us,
in Your mercy receive us,
now and always. (Ancient Collect)
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
in the name of Christ.
Amen
