Sunday, March 29, 2020: The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Welcome to the CHS Vientiane Worship Service Resources

We invite you to take time this Sunday, in families or very small groups of friends, to responsibly share space to worship God together. If you are on your own, please be assured we are together in the Spirit and if you have needs, or just want to share concerns, please don't be afraid to reach out and share these with the CHS community.  Contact details can be found on our church website at:  http://www.the-chs.org/

Ideas for parents to use with their children at home can be found on this page (click this link).

Scripture Sentence

                                                                                                    Psalm 68:20

Collect
Almighty God,
your Son came into the world
to free us all from sin and death.
Breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit,
that we may be raised to new life in Christ,
and serve you in holiness and righteousness
all our days; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Call to Worship
In the valley of bones,
the Lord comes to bring life.
In the valleys of our lives,
the Lord comes to bring life.
Come Lord and breathe on us today,
Inspiring us to live in your Spirit,
and in your love.
Inspire our worship
as we gather in your name.
Amen.

Opening Song
Mission Praise 38  As we are gathered

Confession
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us and care for us all the time.
We know that this week we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Silence
By Your love,
shown in Christ,
present with us through Your Spirit,
take away from us what we need carry no longer,
and in the days which lie ahead,
give us what we need
to know You more clearly,
to love You more dearly
and to follow You more closely;
Amen.

Creed
We believe in God the Father,
Maker of all things.
We believe in his Son Jesus Christ,
Lord and Saviour of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
giver of life and light.
We belong to the Church,
God’s family everywhere.
Amen.

Children’s Song
Be Bold, Be Strong! (Look out for the spelling mistake!) (MP 49)

Prayer for / with the children
Loving God,
We pray especially for children.
We ask that you would help them at this time,
particularly for those who are bored and frustrated
at not being able to see friends
or move around as freely as before.
We pray they would be able to make the most of having to do school at home.
We pray for parents to have more patience
and for them to be able to explain what is happening
in a way that helps children understand without scaring them.
We pray for grandparents and older relatives,
that you would look after them and keep them safe
until we see one another again.
We pray in Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Offering
(Please do bear in mind that as long as we are still able to, CHS is continuing to support various projects and people in need and needs will likely increase during this time.  You may want to set aside some money in an envelope every Sunday and bring these to church when we next meet back at ARDA.)

Dedication of our Offering
Lord, our God,
we acknowledge that
you are our father,
we are your children,
our neighbours are people
whom you cared enough about
to come and die for.
To their service and to your glory
we dedicate ourselves,
our hearts and minds, our wills and works.
Strengthen our resolve
to stand fast in your faith,
to seek the help of the Holy Spirit,
and to work willingly for your perfect kingdom,
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayers
(Please do use the newly formed WhatsApp group or contact Pastor Tony directly if you have any prayer needs you would like included in our intercessions.)

Merciful God,

We recognise that all is not well with the world;
and so we offer our prayers for church, world, and people.
For Your church;
that it may experience the new life which You offer through Your Holy Spirit;
that even with the current restrictions it may still be
a welcoming and challenging community,
witnessing to Your love in the world.
At this time when the world is facing a challenge unprecedented in most of our lifetimes we pray…

For the world;
we pray for people who suddenly find themselves isolated and alone .
we pray for vulnerable people without friends or family…
locked down, lonely and frightened;
those without internet who fear they will be forgotten;
and those who are online, who feel like they are being bombarded
by information and are close to despair;
Trail wide the hem of Your garment;

All: Bring healing, bring peace

We remember those who wait;
for medical results,
for news about their loved ones or jobs or wages;
those who struggle in the long watches of the night,
waiting until morning light dawns.
Trail wide the hem of Your garment;

All: Bring healing, bring peace

We pray for those who are ill, at home or in hospital;
for those who care for them;
family members, friends, care assistants, nurses and doctors;
for those who are overworked and exhausted,
stretched beyond their capacity to stay healthy themselves;
for those who have lost loved ones; especially this morning we remember Khone, the wife of our late brother Heinz and the family in Laos and in Switzerland,
for others who are in mourning, remembering the loss of someone close,
suddenly reminded by everyday incidents of someone no longer there.
Trail wide the hem of Your garment;

All: Bring healing, bring peace

And breathe new life into Your people, living God,
as we approach Easter.
May we journey towards Jerusalem,
knowing Your presence,
leading, guiding, challenging.
Amen.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.

Closing Song
Father I place into Your hands (MP133)

Blessing
May the spirit go with you
The spirit takes brokenness, dust,
absence of life, and long time death.
The spirit gives life, renews, it revives,
it gives life, it causes hope, it causes joy.
May the spirit put breath in your lungs
and you will come to life.

Sending
God breathe us back to life:
fill and renew our souls,
quench our thirst
show us how to live
and love and breathe,
reviving bone dry lives
so that we may show others
how to be your people
this day and always...

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
in the name of Christ.
Amen.
