Sunday, June 14, 2020: Second Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to the CHS Vientiane Worship Service Resources

We invite you to take time this Sunday, in families or very small groups of friends, to responsibly share space to worship God together.
If you are on your own, please be assured we are together in the Spirit and if you have needs, or just want to share concerns, please don't be afraid to reach out and share these with the CHS community.  Contact details can be found on our church website at:  http://www.thechs.org/

Ideas for parents to use with their children at home can be found on this page (click this link).

Scripture Sentence
“The Spirit of God affirms to our spirit that we are God’s children.
He comes to the aid of our weakness.” (Romans 8:16,26)

Collect
Almighty God,
without you we are not able to please you.
Mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit
may in all things direct and rule our hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Call to worship
(Psalm 100 The Message)
A Thanksgiving Psalm
On your feet now—applaud God!
    Bring a gift of laughter,
    sing yourselves into his presence.
Know this: God is God, and God, God.
He made us; we didn’t make him.
We’re his people, his well-tended sheep.
Enter with the password: “Thank you!”
Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
    Thank him. Worship him.
For God is sheer beauty,
    all-generous in love,
    loyal always and ever.
Amen.

Opening Hymn of Praise
Praise to the Lord (MP564)

1  Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;
    O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation;
    all ye who hear,
    brothers and sisters, draw near,
    praise Him in glad adoration.

2  Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth:
    hast thou not seen?
all that is needful hath been
    granted in what He ordaineth.

3  Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work, and defend thee!
surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
    Ponder anew
    what the Almighty can do,
who with His love doth befriend thee.

4  Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath come now with praises before Him!
    Let the amen
    sound from His people again:
gladly for aye we adore Him.

Confession
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us and care for us all the time.
We know that this week we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.

(Silence)

Whether we seek forgiveness often, or hardly ever,
faithfully and repeatedly God forgives.
Know the depth of that forgiveness and be at peace…

(Silence)

In Your good time, and through the encouragement of the Holy Spirit,
breathe new life into us that our daily actions may tell the world
that we are pilgrims of the One whom death could not hold down,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

“If we confess our sins,
he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
                                                            (1 John 1: 9)

Creed
We believe in God the Father,
Maker of all things.
We believe in his Son Jesus Christ,
Lord and Saviour of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
giver of life and light.
We belong to the Church,
God’s family everywhere.
Amen.

Children’s Song
When I needed a neighbour (JP275)

1  When I needed a neighbour, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a neighbour, were you there?
And the creed and the colour and the name won’t matter,
        were you there?

2  I was hungry and thirsty, were you there, were you there?
I was hungry and thirsty, were you there?
        And the creed . . .

3  I was cold, I was naked, were you there, were you there?
I was cold, I was naked, were you there?
        And the creed . . .

4  When I needed a shelter, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a shelter, were you there?
        And the creed . . .

5  When I needed a healer, were you there, were you there?
When I needed a healer, were you there?
        And the creed . . .

6  Wherever you travel, I’ll be there, I’ll be there,
Wherever you travel, I’ll be there.
        And the creed . . .

Prayer for / with the Children
Dear God,
we thank you for our world
and all that fills it.
We thank you for all we can do
to make your world a better place.
Help us to care for the world around us
for the people of today
and the generations of tomorrow.
May our words,
our actions and our thoughts
change this world and change the lives
of those around us
and around the globe
for the better.
Amen.

Sermon

*Bonus feature: here is the midweek sermon from Bishop Rennis Ponniah
of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWEWEclBAF4

Song
We sing the praise (MP738)

1  We sing the praise of Him who died,
    of Him who died upon the cross;
the sinner’s hope let men deride,
for this we count the world but lost.

2  Inscribed upon the cross we see,
    in shining letters, ‘God is love’;
He bears our sins upon the tree,
He brings us mercy from above.

3  The cross! it takes our guilt away,
    it holds the fainting spirit up;
it cheers with hope the gloomy day
    and sweetens every bitter cup.

4  It makes the coward spirit brave,
    and nerves the feeble arm for fight;
it takes the terror from the grave,
and gilds the bed of death with light.

5  The balm of life, the cure of woe,
    the measure and the pledge of love;
    the sinners’ refuge here below,
the angels’ theme in heaven above.

Offering
(Please do bear in mind that as long as we are still able to,
CHS is continuing to support various projects and people
in need and needs will likely increase during this time.
You may want to set aside some money in an envelope every Sunday
and bring these to church when we next meet back at ARDA.)

Dedication of our Offering
In the name and in the spirit of Jesus,
we bring our gifts to you;
and seek the grace to give with them
a ready mind, a willing spirit, and a joyful heart,
and to dedicate our lives
to the truth of your gospel;
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord,
in whom we see your everlasting goodness
and receive your kindly care.
Amen.

Intercessions and Thanksgiving
In longer evenings when light lingers
as we near the midpoint of the year
we offer You our thanks and praise.
We remember and hold before You
people in your world where the fading of the light brings not only darkness but sadness and discomfort.
May they know Your light.

When we gather and share food and laughter with friends, relatives,
and those whom we love
and also when we are content to eat alone –
we offer You our thanks and praise.
We remember and hold before You
those who today will share meals tainted with sadness,
those who through no choice of their own eat alone,
those who are hungry and have little food.
May they soon know joy and plenty.

When we have been offered hospitality that was generous or unexpected –
we have been blessed
and we offer You our thanks and praise.
We remember and hold before You refugees and those who are strangers in a foreign land,
those for whom exceptional warmth and hospitality would mean so much.
May they know a rich welcome and ongoing support.

When someone who knows us a little, but not well, remembers our names –
we offer You our thanks for their care and attentiveness.
We remember and hold before You those who have been forced to change names
or those who forget their names – the overseas student in a culture that feels alien,
those who have been trafficked,
those living with dementia.
May they know liberation and freedom.

And hear us too as we take time to remember and hold before You
those caught up in the Covid19 crisis, particularly those in India, who must travel
from hospital to hospital, desperately trying to find one in which their loved one will
receive treatment.
We remember this and other countries pressured by economic necessity to ease the
lockdown, while the number of cases is soaring.
We continue to pray about the political unrest in the United States and other
countries in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd,
We thank you for the courageous words that have been spoken and the hope that
his terrible death may not have been in vain.
For his family and all those who mourn lives cut short or blighted by the scourge
of prejudice,
Minister to their needs we pray.

In a moment of silence we bring before God the people and situations brought to our attention, which we lift up in prayer now...

(Stephen, a former prisoner who we have prayed for several years, currently back in the UK, lost his father on Wednesday. Please pray for him and his stepmother Mary that they may know God's comfort at this time and that Stephen who has struggled with alcohol issues for many years, may not be so overwhelmed by grief that he returns to problem drinking.

A couple who served in Laos for several years, currently living in the USA, Corky and Maurice Babcock's grandson, Roman aged 11, who had a congenital health condition went to be with the Lord on Friday. Please pray for the family to be comforted at this time. They lost a son and daughter-in-law in the Pakse air crash in 2013, so this is another heavy blow. Pray that their hope in the Lord's goodness, love and faithfulness will be undiminished and help them through this time, particularly as they seek to comfort their daughter, Amelia.)

Ever creating, ever loving, ever encouraging God,
we offer You our deep thanks.
Use our gifts, talents and skills in the world
so that our lives may tell out Your praise and where possible
help those whom we have remembered before You today.
Hear our prayers,
through Jesus Christ our loving Saviour
Amen.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Closing Song
“The Summons” - Will you come and follow me?

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Will you love the "you" you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In Your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

Prayer of Sending and Blessing

All: to serve as God calls us
into a world in need of his co-workers.
