Approach to God / Call to worship
Leader: God of light,
light of light
true God of true God
ALL: We bless You
Leader: God of new beginnings,
hope of hope,
as we reach for this new year
ALL: We bless You
Leader: God of joy,
delight of delight,
as we give thanks for all that is good
ALL: We bless You
Amen
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,
gentle as is the dove:
teach us the truth and help us believe,
show us the Saviour’s love!
1 You spoke to us – long, long ago –
gave us the written word;
we read it still, needing its truth,
through it God’s voice is heard.
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind . . .
2 Without Your help, we fail our Lord,
we cannot live His way;
we need Your power, we need Your strength,
following Christ each day.
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind . . .
Confession
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us
and care for us all the time.
We know that this week
we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things
and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
For I’m building a people of power
and I’m making a people of praise,
that will move through this land by My Spirit,
and will glorify My precious name.
Build Your Church, Lord,
make us strong, Lord,
join our hearts, Lord, through Your Son;
make us one, Lord, in Your body,
in the kingdom of Your Son.
1 Breathe on me, breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what Thou dost love,
and do what Thou wouldst do.
2 Breathe on me, breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with Thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.
3 Breathe on me, breath of God,
till I am wholly Thine,
until this earthly part of me
glows with Thy fire divine.
4 Breathe on me, breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with Thee the perfect life
of Thine eternity.
Prayers
Let us pray.
We hold in God’s light all across the nation of the United States of America who yearn for deep peace and unity. [include prayers requested for other nations where there is need for unity.]
We hold in God’s light all who live with anxiety, fear, dread or despair across our globe. [include prayers requested for those struggling with Covid19, or in the caring professions.]
We hold in God’s light this one fragile planet which we inhabit. [include prayer for the upcoming COP 26, the UN World Climate Change Conference, taking place in Glasgow, later this year and for all who work for creation justice]
We pray for justice for the poor and the persecuted.[include prayers for those suffering persecution or from poverty across the globe]
And we pray that the Prince of Peace may remind us and remind us and remind us that our task is to be His hands and hearts on this earth.
Amen
1 By faith we see the hand of God
in the light of creation’s grand design;
in the lives of those who prove His faithfulness,
who walk by faith and not by sight.
2 By faith our fathers roamed the earth
with the power of His promise in their hearts:
of a holy city built by God’s own hand –
a place where peace and justice reigns.
We will stand as children of the promise,
We will fix our eyes on Him, our soul’s reward.
Till the race is finished and the work is done,
we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
3 By faith the prophets saw a day
when the longed-for Messiah would appear
with the power to break the chains of sin and death,
and rise triumphant from the grave.
4 By faith the church was called to go
in the power of the Spirit to the lost,
to deliver captives and to preach good news
in every corner of the earth.
We will stand . . .
5 By faith this mountain shall be moved
and the power of the gospel shall prevail,
for we know in Christ all things are possible
for those who call upon His name.
We will stand . . .
We will stand . . .
. . .we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
Jesus was baptised by the Holy Spirit
when he came up out of the water.
By the power of the Spirit, Jesus did
battle with evil
and showed God’s love.
Jesus baptises his church and his people with
the Holy Spirit.
He gives us power to do God’s work.
In baptism we receive the Holy Spirit.
May the Spirit lead us to share God’s
love.
In the power of the Spirit...
