Church Service on Sunday, December 6th, 2020 Second Sunday of Advent

Welcome to the CHS Vientiane Worship Service Resources

We invite you to take time this Sunday, in families or very small groups of friends, to responsibly share space to worship God together.

If you are on your own, please be assured we are together in the Spirit and if you have needs, or just want to share concerns, please don't be afraid to reach out and share these with the CHS community.  Contact details can be found on our church website at:  http://www.thechs.org/

Scripture Sentence

They will know that they have a prophet among them, whether they listen or whether in their rebelliousness they refuse to listen
.            (
Ezekiel 2: 5)

The Collect

Almighty God,
you sent your servant John the Baptist
to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah.
Inspire the ministers and stewards of your truth
to turn our disobedient hearts to you,
that when the Christ shall come again
to be our judge
we may stand with confidence before his glory;
who is alive and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

Approach to God

Surely God’s salvation is at hand for those who fear God,
That his glory may dwell in our land

Lord God, Your word is not distant,
Your love is not rationed,
Your grace is at hand,
for You are present with Your people as we call upon You.
We come to bless You as our Creator.
We come to honour You as our God.
You are our heavenly Father, revealed through Jesus Christ Your Son,
and we have come to delight in Your word and be transformed by Your love.
Amen

Opening Hymn of Praise

Light of the world (MP1086)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_KNvkk2G-Y

1  Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness,
opened my eyes, let me see
beauty that made this heart adore You,
hope of a life spent with You.
So here I am to worship,
here I am to bow down,
here I am to say that You’re my God:
You’re altogether lovely,
altogether worthy,
altogether wonderful to me.

2  King of all days, O so highly exalted,
glorious in heaven above,
humbly You came to the earth You created,
all for love’s sake became poor.
So here I am to worship . . .

So here I am to worship . . .

And I’ll never know how much it cost
to see my sin upon that cross.
And I’ll never know how much it cost
to see my sin upon that cross.
So here I am to worship . . .

Confession

Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us
and care for us all the time.
We know that this week
we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things
and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen

Silence

In the name of Jesus Christ,
I declare to you
who have confessed your sin to God that he of his love
freely forgives you
and absolves you of all your sin.
He offers you now
the grace and strength of his Holy Spirit.

Amen

Merciful God,
you have prepared for those who love you
such good things as pass human understanding. Pour into our hearts such love towards you
that we, loving you above all things,
may obtain your promises,
which exceed all that we can desire;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Creed

We believe in God the Father,
Maker of all things.
We believe in his Son Jesus Christ,
Lord and Saviour of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
giver of life and light.
We belong to the Church,
God’s family everywhere.
Amen

Song

O Come, O Come Emmanuel (MP 493)

1  O come, O come, Emmanuel,
    and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
        Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

2  O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height
in ancient times didst give the law
in cloud and majesty and awe.
        Rejoice, rejoice . . .

3  O come, Thou rod of Jesse, free
    Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
from depths of hell Thy people save,
and give them victory o’er the grave.
        Rejoice, rejoice . . .

4  O come, Thou dayspring, come and cheer
    our spirits by Thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death’s dark shadows put to flight.
        Rejoice, rejoice . . .

5  O come, Thou key of David, come
    and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery.
        Rejoice, rejoice . . .

Prayer for / with the Children

(Breathe in slowly.)
Lord, we breathe out our hatred. (Breathe out.)
Fill us with love. (Breathe in.)
We breathe out our quarrelsome nature. (Breathe out.)
Fill us with peace. (Breathe in etc.)
We breathe out our meanness.
Help us to celebrate goodness and encourage others.
We breathe out our indifference.
Fill us with enthusiasm for you.
We breathe out our selfishness.
Help us to reach out to help others.
We breathe out our greed.
Help us to share.
We breathe out our fear.
Fill us with trust and confidence in you.(Invite people to rest in God’s presence.)
Cause us to come back to life.
Bring us back to the life you want us to live.
Make us breathe again.
Make us breathe in the power of your Holy Spirit.
We claim Christ’s promise to send the Holy Spirit,
and we ask this prayer in Jesus’ name.

Amen

Sermon

A member of the congregation will be preaching this Sunday.

Song

On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry (JP 186)

1  On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry
    announces that the Lord is nigh;
come then and listen for he brings
glad tidings from the King of kings.

2  Then cleansed be every heart from sin;
    make straight the way for God within;
prepare we in our hearts a home,
where such a mighty guest may come.

3  For You are our salvation, Lord,
    our refuge and our great reward;
without Your grace we waste away,
like flowers that wither and decay.

4 Stretch forth your hand
   To heal our sore
   and make us rise, to fall no more;
Once more upon your people shine,
and fill the world with love divine

5  To Him who left the throne of heaven
    to save mankind, all praise be given;
to God the Father, voices raise,
and Holy Spirit, let us praise.

Offering

(Please do bear in mind that as long as we are still able to,
CHS is continuing to support various projects and people in need
and needs will likely increase during this time.
You may want to set aside some money in an envelope
every Sunday and bring these to church when we next meet back at ARDA.)

Dedication of our Offering

We bring our gifts to you, Lord God,
with cheerfulness and a joyful heart.
Grant that with our gifts
we may also offer a ready mind and a willing spirit
to show forth in our lives
the truth of the gospel;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Intercession

God of faithfulness and truth,
You sent Your servant John the Baptist to preach in the desert
and summon people to repentance.
Make us and all things new,
that in the wilderness of our hearts
we too may prepare a way
over which Your Son may walk.

Our land needs You,
because so many things are done wrongly,
or not done at all.
Our land needs You, because it is suffering from the way we mistreat Your world and its people.
Our land needs You, because without the knowledge of God there is poverty of spirit.
And we need You.
We inhabit this land,
we share in its faults, we confess the sins and failures which have harmed others and harmed ourselves,
and grieved Your Spirit.
Have mercy on us, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Your salvation is at hand – may Your Spirit bear witness with our spirits,
that we belong to You,
and that we are heirs to eternal life, through Jesus Christ.

We bless You that this Jesus Christ is no mere formula of prayer,
that the Word became flesh and lived among us,
that Your Son lives as our friend in heaven,
that Your Spirit is given to Your people.
Give us discernment of mind, that we understand Your word.
Give us discernment of heart, that we become tender towards You and other people.
Give us discernment of life, that we take the right turnings and follow the right paths,
in company with our Lord Jesus Christ,
to whom with Father and Spirit be glory and praise for ever.

Lord, we pray for the work of HIV Programmes around the world. For people caring faithfully for the well being of others
and showing Your love in practical ways.
We ask for Your help and strength.

We remember today all who are unable to access antiretroviral medication,
particularly at this time, when Covid-19 is affecting us all.

Strengthen us so we never grow weary of doing good in Your name,
of offering the hope to others.
Help us to raise our voices in solidarity
with those who have been silenced.

Help us to always seek justice for those whose lives are so much harder than our own.

Thank You for being the Good Shepherd who cares equally for us all and help us to follow Your example.

Amen

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen

Closing Song

Still (MP 1057)

1  Hide me now under Your wings.
Cover me within Your mighty hand.
When the oceans rise and thunder roars,
I will soar with You above the storm.
Father, You are King over the flood;
I will be still and know You are God.

2  Find rest, my soul, in Christ alone.
Know His power in quietness and trust.
When the oceans rise . . .

Prayer of Sending and Blessing
May the coming of the day of God be your earnest desire:
and the blessing of God almighty,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
be upon you and those dear to you,
this day and every day that remains to us.

Amen

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
in the name of Christ.
Amen
