Sunday, September 06, 2020: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to the CHS Vientiane Worship Service Resources

We invite you to take time this Sunday, in families or very small groups of friends, to responsibly share space to worship God together.

If you are on your own, please be assured we are together in the Spirit and if you have needs, or just want to share concerns, please don't be afraid to reach out
and share these with the CHS community.  Contact details can be found on our church website at:  http://www.thechs.org/

Ideas for parents to use with their children at home can be found on this page (click this link).

Scripture Sentence
“Cry out, shout aloud, for the Holy One of Israel is among you in majesty.” (Isaiah 12: 6)

Collect
Stir up O Lord
the wills of your faithful people,
that richly bearing the fruit of good works
we may by you be richly rewarded;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Call to Worship
The Creator of the Universe calls us to leave the darkness behind and live in the light.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again, greets us this day.
The One who danced at Creation’s birth calls us now into their presence.
So come, let us worship.

Opening Hymn of Praise

Praise is Rising (Hosanna) (MP 1221)

1  Praise is rising,
eyes are turning to You,
we turn to You.
Hope is rising,
hearts are yearning for You,
we long for You.
’Cause when we see You,
we find strength to face the day;
in Your presence
all our fears are washed away, washed away.
        Hosanna, hosanna,
You are the God who saves us,
worthy of all our praises.
Hosanna, hosanna,
come have Your way among us,
we welcome You here Lord Jesus.

2  Hear the sound of hearts
returning to You,
we turn to You.
In Your kingdom
broken lives
are made new,
You make us new.
’Cause when we see You,
we find strength to face the day;
in Your presence
all our fears are washed away, washed away.
Hosanna, hosanna . . .

        Hosanna, hosanna.
Hosanna, hosanna.

Confession
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us
and care for us all the time.
We know that this week
we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things
and not done all the good things we should have done.
Only you can save us,
so please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen

Silence
Forgive us, good Lord,
and help us to turn our sorrow into action,
our failure into change,
our guilt into grace.
pause
God, the source of all mercy,
has sent the Holy Spirit amongst us
for the forgiveness of sins,
the equipping of the saints
and the fine tuning of our hearts.
Know that you are forgiven,
know too that you, with all of humanity,
need to use the grace of forgiveness
to be an energy of change
These prayers we bring You,
in and through the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen.

Creed

We believe in God the Father,
Maker of all things.
We believe in his Son Jesus Christ,
Lord and Saviour of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
giver of life and light.
We belong to the Church,
God’s family everywhere.
Amen.

Prayer for / with the Children

Oh, Lord of love,
Help us to follow your example and love our
neighbours.
Help us to know your love for us and to love
ourselves too.
Help us to grow in our love for you, for who
you are as well as what you have done.
Bless us with clear minds to hear your Word.
Bless us with big hearts to love your world.
And bless us with clear consciences to live
as you ask.
We ask this so that you may be seen in us wherever
we go in your name.
Amen.

Sermon

Song

Jesus Christ (Once Again) (MP 995)

1  Jesus Christ, I think upon Your sacrifice;
You became nothing, poured out to death.
Many times I’ve wondered at Your gift of life,
and I’m in that place once again,
I’m in that place once again.
And once again I look upon
the cross where You died,
I’m humbled by Your mercy
and I’m broken inside.
Once again I thank You,
once again I pour out my life.

2  Now You are exalted to the highest place,
King of the heavens, where one day I’ll bow,
but for now, I marvel at this saving grace
and I’m full of praise once again,
I’m full of praise once again.
And once again . . .

Thank You for the cross,
thank You for the cross,
thank You for the cross, my friend.
(repeat)
And once again . . .

Offering
(Please do bear in mind that as long as we are still able to, CHS is continuing to support various projects and people in need and needs will likely increase during this time. You may want to set aside some money in an envelope every Sunday and bring these to church when we next meet back at ARDA.)

Dedication of our Offering

Gracious and loving God,
if we have gifts to bring,
it is of your free mercy;
for all things are yours,
and what we have comes from you.
Accept the offerings we make,
and grant that gifts which can never be worthy
may yet be hallowed by your blessing
and used in your service;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Thanksgiving and Intercessions

Let us pray with Christ:
God, who makes us with the Earth
God, who gives us to the world
God-with-us in our struggles:
Hear our fears and needs
Hold our hand as You walk beside us
Advise, encourage and guide us.

We pray for the world:
Let us reflect on some of the key global news events this week. The global Pandemic and its impact across the world. The forthcoming US Presidential elections. The ongoing impact of the Beirut explosions and the problems facing Lebanon. The protests against the Belorussian president. The mass execution of civilians in Tillaberi by the army in Niger. The threat of extinction to 550 species of mammal this century due human activity.
• Are there people or communities in need, or others that can be thankful?
• Are there reports of progress or setbacks to bring to God?
• Can we pray in sorrow or in hope for events that make us feel overwhelmed?
• Can we hear the Earth’s voice in any of these stories that we need to bring in prayer?
• Which of our human, animal or environmental neighbours do we need to bring before
God?
• Bring our enemies and those we fear to God today and
• Pray for peace throughout Creation
God-with-us,
Hear our fears and needs
Hold our hand as You walk beside us
Advise, encourage and guide us.

We pray for the Church:
• We give thanks for the faithfulness of the church community, and its undergirding of prayer - prayer in church as the tip of the iceberg: personal prayer and group prayer through the week
• We acknowledge any national or local divisions within the church and pray that God’s
wisdom and discernment will be sought particularly in relationships with the Lao Government and in negotiating the release of those held in prison for their religious belief.
•We seek guidance on how the Church can increase and weave environmental concerns into
our life and work for the sake of God's earth and his people.
• We pray for a desire to experience the joy of a deeper fellowship with all Creation
God-with-us,
Hear our fears and needs
Hold our hand as You walk beside us
Advise, encourage and guide us.

We pray for ourselves:
• In silence, we bring our personal concerns to God, who knows and understands our
deepest thoughts
• We ask God for support and perseverance when we struggle, and a sustaining sign when we
get things right
• We pray for those beside us, acknowledging and respecting what they cannot share with us
• We ask God for a sense of impatience for change, rather than accepting the way things are
• We pray for peace in our hearts, and the fuller joys of Christ in our lives.

God-with-us,
Hear our fears and needs
Hold our hand as You walk beside us
Advise, encourage and guide us.
In Jesus’ name we pray
Amen

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen

Closing Song

Guide me, O Though great Jehovah (MP 201)

1  Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
    pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
hold me with Thy powerful hand:
        Bread of heaven,
    feed me now and evermore.

2  Open now the crystal fountain,
    whence the healing stream doth flow;
    let the fiery, cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through:
        strong deliverer,
be Thou still my strength and shield.

3  When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    bid my anxious fears subside:
death of death, and hell’s destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side:
        songs of praises
I will ever give to Thee.

Prayer of Sending and Blessing

From whatever binds us,
from that which holds us back,
from the fear of change that traps us,
release us now to go in faith,
to step forward with your grace,
and to live the gospel of love,
in our community and world.
Walk with us now and always.
And the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
be among you and remain with you.
Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord,
in the name of Christ.
Amen
